Trump: No Talks, No Deals — Surrender Only
On Friday morning, President Trump said the US will not talk to Iran's government. He posted on social media that Iran must give an "unconditional surrender." Only then, he wrote, would the US help rebuild Iran into something "bigger, better, and stronger."
Trump also said he should be involved in choosing Iran's next leader. He called Ayatollah Khamenei's son — seen as a top candidate — a "lightweight." He said the US would pick someone "GREAT & ACCEPTABLE."
Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian pushed back. He said some countries have begun to offer mediation. He did not name them. Iran's government has refused to surrender. Iran's ambassador to Egypt previously told reporters there would be no trust in Trump and no negotiations.
What Trump said: Surrender first. Then the US will help rebuild Iran.
What Iran said: No surrender. Mediation is possible. No talks with Trump directly.
US Military Sets Iranian Drone Ship on Fire
The US military said early Friday it struck and set ablaze a large Iranian warship called the IRIS Shahid Bagheri. US Central Command — CENTCOM — released video showing the ship burning.
The IRIS Shahid Bagheri is not a normal warship. It is a converted cargo ship. Iran added a 197-yard runway on the deck so it can launch drones far from Iran's coastline. The ship can travel around the entire Earth without stopping to refuel.
Iran did not immediately say anything about the attack on the ship.
Earlier this week, a US submarine sank a different Iranian warship — the IRIS Dena — killing 87 sailors near Sri Lanka. That was the first US torpedo attack since World War II.
Israel Bombs Lebanon — 95,000 Flee
Israeli warplanes struck Beirut, Lebanon's capital, on Friday. The strikes were the heaviest in Lebanon since a ceasefire ended a previous war in late 2024.
Israel said it was targeting Hezbollah — the Lebanese armed group that has been firing rockets at Israel since the war started. Hezbollah is backed by Iran.
More than 95,000 people have left Beirut's southern suburbs and southern Lebanon. Israel issued evacuation warnings to many of those areas before the strikes. The death toll from the Lebanon strikes now exceeds 200.
Israel Also Strikes Tehran Again
At the same time, Israel launched what it called a "broad-scale wave of strikes" on Tehran, Iran's capital. Witnesses reported very loud explosions shaking buildings. Large columns of smoke rose over the city. Explosions were also reported near Kermanshah, a city with major Iranian missile bases.
Israel said it had been bombing a large underground bunker where Iran's leaders had planned to hide during the war.
Iran Fires Back Across the Gulf
Iran launched missiles and drones at several countries that host US military forces: Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain. All four countries said they intercepted the attacks. No major casualties were reported from the Iranian strikes on those countries.
Air raid sirens went off in Bahrain. The Bahrain Interior Ministry said two hotels and a residential building were hit, but no one was killed.
Oil Prices Hit $90 a Barrel
The price of oil crossed $90 a barrel on Friday for the first time in more than two years. Gas prices in the US rose 34 cents in just one week. The national average is now $3.32 per gallon.
Qatar's energy minister warned in a financial newspaper interview that the war could "bring down the economies of the world." He said Gulf countries could shut off energy exports if fighting continues — which could push oil to $150 a barrel.
Iran Begins Choosing a New Leader
Iran's state television reported that a leadership council has begun meeting to figure out how to select a new Supreme Leader. Iran's previous Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in the opening strikes of the war one week ago.
Iran's Assembly of Experts — an 88-member panel of religious scholars — is responsible for choosing the next leader. But several buildings associated with that panel have been bombed during the war. Israel has said it will strike the next leader if he poses a threat.
What Comes Next
The war is now in its seventh day. No ceasefire talks are officially underway. Trump has ruled out negotiations without full surrender. Iran has refused to surrender. Several countries are reportedly trying to mediate behind the scenes. The death toll stands at over 1,230 in Iran, more than 200 in Lebanon, around 12 in Israel, and 6 US troops killed in action.
